Location History and Your Privacy

By Click&Clean - Wednesday, May 20, 2020. Apple, like all major technology companies, has a location tracking feature, which helps Apple apps suggest destinations and places you may be interested in visiting, recommend products and services, provide real-time traffic updates, find your phone, and so on.

However, not everyone may feel comfortable with Apple knowing where they were last week and where they're going, what their favorite restaurant or cafe is, or what they like or dislike. So, in this article, we will show you how to manage, delete, or pause the location history of your iPhone or iPad.

Manage Your Location Settings on iPhone

1. Manage Your Location History

On your iPhone, tap SettingsPrivacyLocation ServicesSystem ServicesSignificant Locations ("Frequent Locations" in some phones).

After authentication, you'll find a list of places you've visited along with their names and dates. You can remove individual locations or delete the entire history by simply scrolling down and selecting "Clear History." To pause location history, just turn off the Significant Locations feature.

If you use the Google Maps app and are logged in to your Google account, open the app and tap the Account icon → Your TimelineMore (three horizontal dots) → Settings. Select the option to delete location history, then turn off location tracking options if you want.

2. Control Apps With Access to Location Services

In your phone, go to SettingsPrivacyLocation Services. Here you'll see a list of apps that have access to Location Services on your iPhone. Tap an app you want to control and choose an adequate level of location access: Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App, or Always.

3. Turn Off Location Services

If you don't want any apps to access your location, go to SettingsPrivacyLocation Services and tap on the toggle next to "Location Services." This is good for your privacy and saves your phone's battery life, but the disadvantage is that useful services like Apple or Google Maps may not work.

There is no ideal way to prevent Internet marketers from tracking your data, but we sincerely hope that the steps described above will help you minimize privacy risks. You can also learn how to prevent location tracking on Android smartphones.
